Novice 2 – Sunday 4:15–5:15 PM

Course Description

This Novice 1 class is designed for true beginners who want a gentle yet thorough introduction to chess. Over 14 sessions of 60 minutes each, running from September 21 to December 21, 2025, students will explore the fundamentals—from piece movement, capturing, and basic checkmates to proper piece development. The extended session length gives extra time to practice and absorb new concepts in a supportive environment. Tuition is $560.

Key Highlights:

1. Fundamental Skills Emphasis: Students will master how each piece moves, learn basic capture strategies, and internalize simple, early checkmate patterns including checkmate in one and rook-roller mate.
2. Longer Class Duration: At 90 minutes per session, there’s more time for hands-on practice, guided activities, and reinforcement. Ideal for learners who benefit from a bit more time to explore and ask questions.
3. Strong Opening Foundations: Early lessons include piece development and establishing good habits in the opening—even before complex tactics come in.
4. Stable Schedule with Small Groups: A consistent weekly Sunday class helps build momentum. Combined with the small-group setting, this ensures personalized attention and support.

By the end of this Novice 1 Sunday class, students will be able to move all pieces correctly, capture with confidence, deliver basic checkmates (including rook-roller mate), and begin playing casual games without hesitation.
